News Round-Up 05/08/16

Sporting players and former academy products were in action last night in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Portugal beat Argentina 2-0 thanks to goals from Gonçalo Paciência and Pité.

Included in Rui Jorge’s starting XI were Tobias Figueiredo and captain Ricardo Esgaio. André Martins, Edgar Ié and Tiago Ilori also featured with Carlos Mané an unused substitute.

Teófilo Gutiérrez also scored for Colombia in their match against Sweden but it is uncertain how much longer he will be a Sporting player.

Sporting have bolstered their attacking options for the B team with 2 signings. The first is the loan signing of 22-year old Bilel Aouacheria from Sporting Covilhã with an option to buy. The second is another loan signing, of 19-year old Portugal youth international Ricardo Almeida from Moreirense for 2 seasons.

With Eduardo seemingly on his way to Chelsea, Sporting are apparently close to signing Beto as the new back up goalkeeper to Rui Patrício. According to the Portuguese press, Beto just needs to complete his medical before signing a 2-year contract with the option of an extra year, he has been out of contract after his spell at Sevilla. Beto will be returning to Sporting after having been at the club from 1995-2004.

Sporting Sign Leonardo Ruiz, Loan Deals, & Transfer Rumours Round-Up

Yesterday Sporting completed the signing of former Porto B forward Leonardo Ruiz to join Sporting B. The Colombian was signed on loan by Porto from Atlético Nacional from 2014 to 2016. Sporting have an option to made the transfer permanent.

Ruiz said he wanted to aim to score 20 goals this season. With the return of Betinho to Belenenses and the departures of Ousmane Dramé (permanently) and Hadi Sacko (on loan) the B team does need extra fire power up front.

Vitória de Setúbal look set to take Ryan Gauld and André Geraldes on loan for the next season. With how João Mário and Rubén Semedo improved their it could be an excellent move for both players.

There are still plenty of transfer rumours from the various Portuguese dailies. Like always, their scattergun approach means sometimes, just sometimes, they’re right. So here’s a quick round up…

Teófilo Gutiérrez looked set to return to Argentina with Rosario Central apparently the club closest to signing the Colombian striker. According Teó’s agent he also has proposals from the United States and Europe so don’t expect this one to be resolved anytime soon.

One rumour reported by the papers, one that has been reported on for a while, is Eduardo to become Rui Patrício’s back-up for this season. The club just has to work out a deal with Dinamo Zagreb.

Should Napoli eventually sell Gonzalo Higuaín then Islam Slimani would become their priority. Although, Italian press have also linked them with lots of other big name strikers.

Staying in Italy, Atalanta are interesting in Alberto Aquilani. After the Italian midfielder’s performance against PSV Eindhoven, any bid will probably be accepted.

Again in Italy, according to O Jogo, Sporting are interested in Palermo’s Achraf Lazaar. The left-back, a position Sporting apparently want to bolster, is available for €5m.

Sporting are looking to make Sebastián Coates’ loan deal permanently as soon as possible. The Uruguayan is still a Sunderland player.

Canadian forward Cyle Larin, currently at Orlando City, has apparently impressed enough for Sporting to consider a bid that would need be around €4m to capture his signature. With Teó set to leave and apparently Hernán Barcos also set to departure Sporting are in need of a new striker. Lukas Spalvis’ injury leaves only Islam Slimani as a true striker.

The press have linked Sporting with 2 Argentinian midfielders. The first is Eibar’s Gonzalo Escalante and then Boca Juniors’ defensive midfielder Marcelo Meli is apparently on Sporting’s radar as well.

There was mixed fortunes for both Sporting teams as pre-season continued. The first team lost 4-2 to Zenit St. Petersburg with Bruno César and Gelson Martins scoring for Jorge Jesus’ team but João de Deus’ B team did pick up a win against Estoril.

Zenit took the lead after just 8 minutes when Jorge Jesus’ former player Javi García scored past Ažbe Jug. Sporting bounced back immediately though, through Bruno César after excellent play from Gelson Martins.

Yuri Zhirkov made it 2-1 in the 16th minute although Jug would have felt he could have done better. Aleksandr Kerzhakov made it 3 immediately afterwards, this time after a mistake from Rúben Semedo.

Hernán Barcos set up Gelson Martins before half-time to pull one back for Sporting.

Daniel Podence got the first goal in the 87th minute before Matheus Pereira grabbed a second in the second minute of injury time. There was still enough time for Pedrinho to pull one back for Freamunde but Sporting came out on top.

Freamunde were the better side in the game for most of the first and second halves. Pedro Silva was required on occasion and Freamunde will also be unhappy with their in ability to finish.

Sporting B, however, persevered and were rewarded just 3 minutes from the end when Daniel Podence sped through the Freamunde defence Rui Nereu.

Just 5 minutes later Matheus Pereira also burst through the Freamunde defence. The Brazilian went round goalkeeper Nereu before calmly finish to guarantee all 3 points.
