Sporting players called up to Portugal squads

The latest squad selections for the Portuguese national teams have been announced and, as ever, Sporting are greatly represented.

The biggest news is Gelson Martins’ first called up to the senior squad by Fernando Santos. The winger’s excellent start to the season has not gone unnoticed however Rúben Semedo has not made it to the senior team and is included in the U21 squad.

Elsewhere there were players selected for the Women’s side as well. Susana Cova named 5 Sporting players in her U19 team and 3 Sporting players were selected for the U17 team.

SPORTING B 2-2 Gil Vicente

Sporting B were denied a much needed win by a last minute Gil Vicente equaliser in Alcochete.

João de Deus’ men have been struggling to get wins in recent weeks but this time the coach had reinforcements. Ricardo Esgaio, Bruno Paulista and Matheus Pereira all started, the 3 first team players in need of first team action.

All 4 goals came in the last 30 minutes of the game. Gil Vicente struck first through defender Ricardo Miranda.

Sporting hit back immediately through substitute Pedro Marques, who was the hero against Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth Cup, scoring just a minute after Miranda’s goal.

It looked like Marques had struck the winner for Sporting when he made it 2-1 in the 80th minute.

However Gil Vicente stole a point in the end with Brazilian midfielder Arthur Rezende beating Pedro Silva to make it 2-2.

Sporting currently sit way down in 20th place but with so many games left and a young team that should only get better there shouldn’t be any reason for Sporting to panic just yet.

SPORTING B 2-4 Fafe

Sporting B failed to hold on to their half-time lead to lose 2-4 against Fafe at the Academia Sporting, Ronaldo Tavares and Pedro Marques scored the goals for João de Deus’ side.

Sporting were without the suspended Guilherme Ramos so Ivanildo Fernandes filled in at centre-back alongside Fidel Escobar. Pedro Marques and Bilel Aouacheria also started in the place of Elves Baldé and Ricardo Almeida.

Sporting played their best football in the first half. Ronaldo Tavares got the lead in the 33rd minute after some excellent individual work.

Alan Júnior pulled one back for Fafe but immediately afterwards Pedro Marques but Sporting back in the lead.

The visitors improved after the break and drew level early on in the second-half through Ferrinho.

Then, two goals in as many minutes gave Fafe the win. First through Evandro Brandão and then Leandro Borges.

Late in the game João de Deus handed a debuts to the Azerbaijani midfielder Budag Nasyrov and Jovane Cabral, the 18-year old Cape Verdean forward.

This defeat is a reminder of what a difficult season it could be for João de Deus and his young team.

Sporting da Covilhã 1-2 SPORTING B

Sporting B got their first win after coming from behind against Sporting da Covilhã. The home side led through Agostinho Soares at half-time but a goal from Ricardo Almeida and an own goal from Éder Díez gave Sporting the win.

João de Deus made one change from the team that lost against Portimonense with a debut for 16-year old Elves Baldé in the place of Bilel Aouacheria.

It was a fairly even game from both teams with chances at either end. Ronaldo Tavares and Ricardo Almeida looked dangerous for Sporting going forward.

Pedro Silva, in the Sporting goal, was needed to make some excellent saves. He was eventually beaten by Agostinho Soares just before the break.

Sporting improved in the second-half and eventually equalised through Ricardo Almeida after some good work from Pedro Empis on the left wing. After the goal Almeida was replaced by another debutant, 18-year old Pedro Marques.

The winner came in the 76th minute when Mama Baldé’s shot rebounded off of Spanish forward Éder Díez.

Late on in the game Guilherme Ramos was sent off but Sporting managed to hold on the secure the win.
