Sporting kicked off their pre-season campaign with a win against an Azores XI on Saturday in Ponta Delgada and captured the Troféu Pedro Pauleta.

The game marked a first win for new coach Marco Silva and a whole host of first games for many of the new signings. Shikabala opened the scoring for Sporting in impressive style in the second-half before Santa Clara forward Hélder Arruda equalised just 2 minutes later. Sporting wrapped up the win with a Wilson Eduardo goal later on.

Marco Silva’s first XI was – Marcelo Boeck; Cédric Soares, Maurício, Eric Dier, Jefferson; Oriol Rosell, Adrien Silva, André Martins; Carlos Mané, André Carrillo, Fredy Montero.

After the break there was a huge amount of changes with Marco Silva swapping his entire outfield team. André Geraldes, Paulo Oliveira, Tobias Figueiredo, Mica Pinto, João Mário, Shikabala, Vítor Silva, Wilson Eduardo, Diego Capel and Junya Tanaka. Later on in the game also saw the introductions of Ryan Gauld and Héldon Ramos – only substitute goalkeeper Guilherme Oliveira didn’t feature.

Elsewhere, in case you’ve been living under a rock, the World Cup final finished with Marcos Rojo on the eventual losing side though the Argentinian had a great tournament.

In transfer rumours Eric Dier is being strongly linked with Newcastle United. O Jogo claiming the proposed transfer is “imminent”. Dier’s contract runs out in 2016 and it seems the defender is looking to move away from Sporting.

Islam Slimani’s racking up plenty of rumours with Leicester City the latest club to be linked with the Algerian striker.

Sporting have been linked with the signing of FC Twente winger Jerson Cabral. Cabral, of Cape Verdean descent, currently features for the Netherlands U21 side.

Finally, Record says that Valentín Viola and Salim Cissé have both been dropped down to the B team. Salim Cissé is perhaps likely to get on loan and whilst Viola homes to affirm his place in the Sporting team it looks like he may well be leaving the club soon.

Another round of the various rumours surrounding Sporting in recent days…

According to France Football, USM Alger’s Abderrahmane Bourdim is set to go on trial at Sporting shortly. The youth international has been gathering interest from Monaco and Dijon.

João Mário may not be on his way to Cercle Brugge after all with the player now set to join Vitória de Setubal until the end of the season.

The Elias saga continues this time with Corinthians and Atlético Mineiro also names mentioned but the midfielder still wants to return to Flamengo.

There is currently interest in Zakaria Labyad from Fulham, FC Twente and his former club, PSV Eindhoven. A loan deal for the player until the end of the season is the most likely option at the moment.

Brazilian fullback Welder was looking likely to exit the Alvalade this month with the Palmeiras man not getting much football but the player’s agent, Beto Rappa, says the player is enjoying his time at the club and wants to stay to earn his place in the team.

Bruno de Carvalho is hoping for the club to repurchase the rights of two Sporting players: William Carvalho and Marcos Rojo. The President wants to do it before the start of the World Cup with the club hoping to cash in on large transfer fees afterwards. Sporting currently own 60% of the economic rights of William Carvalho but just 25% of Marcos Rojo.

In a more bizarre story A Bola are reporting that Sporting have been monitoring the situation of Jorge Fucile as he is surplus to requirements at FC Porto. The Uruguayan defender is free to move on from the club with the player almost certain to join Club Nacional de Football it is unlikely he’ll be at Sporting anytime soon as especially with Sporting being well covered in that area.

Oguchi Onyewu Not Far from Joining Sporting

Oguchi Onyewu, the USA international defender, who is currently under contract at AC Milan could well be on his way to join Sporting Clube de Portugal shortly.

According to A Bola, Onyewu is in Lisbon right now and is set to finalise a transfer to Sporting. Having spent the last half of the season on loan at FC Twente it seems that Onyewu has put his injury problems behind him after a knee injury ruined his start to life in Italy.

Onyewu would be the second centre-back to sign for Sporting after Alberto Rodríguez signed back in May.
