Sporting came from behind at home to Braga to keep the pressure on Benfica. An unfortunate Rui Patrício own goal had put the visitors ahead but a Jefferson penalty and an Islam Slimani goal gave Sporting the 3 points.
Leonardo Jardim was without the suspended Adrien Silva and Fredy Montero so Gérson Magrão filled in for Adrien in midfield and Islam Slimani started in attack supported by Carlos Mané and André Carrillo. The Peruvian was making his 100th appearance for Sporting.
The home side had begun the better but were unstuck in the 36th minute when Rui Patrício’s attempt to go back in goal saw him inadvertently deflect the ball that was rebounding from the post.
Sporting equalised when Carlos Mané was fouled in box in the 68th minute. Left-back Jefferson stepped up to cooly covert the penalty and score his first ever goal for Sporting.
Then, just 5 minutes later, Sporting got the winner through Islam Slimani. The Algerian has been on an impressive goal scoring run lately and always seems to bag important goals. His deflected shot was enough to give Sporting all 3 points.
This win puts pressure on Benfica and Porto who play later today.
