The infamous Estádio José Alvalade moat claimed another victim during the game against Vitória de Setúbal on Saturday. Fortunately the fan who fell down the moat had only minor injuries (bruises and a broken tooth) and his visit to hospital was only precautionary.
The club will now be looking at a temporary fix to prevent further similar incidents.
Previously in 2011 in a game against União de Leiria, Diego Capel threw his shirt into the crowd and two fans fell into the moat whilst trying to catch it. Capel himself was distraught and visited the fans afterwards. One of the two fans required surgery on a broken arm.
One of the possible solutions would be some sort of safety net to fill into the gap although a more permanent fix has long been on the cards.
The Alvalade is set to host Portugal’s upcoming World Cup Qualifying match against Israel on Friday.
