Sporting today announced that Jefferson has picked up an injury casting doubts over whether or not he will be able to play the game against Vitória de Setúbal on Saturday night.
The Brazilian left-back, who has recently been rumoured to have interested Sevilla, sprained his right knee during open training yesterday. Meaning either Welder or Iván Piris will most likely be compete for the left-back spot.
Jefferson has thus far impressed in a Sporting shirt and has played all 6 opening games under Leonardo Jardim.
There is also some slight concern over centre-back Maurício after picking up a sprain but the feeling is that he should definitely be ready for Saturday.
Update: Leonardo Jardim confirmed the extent of Jefferson’s injury after reevaluation: “Jefferson is a major player, but we know that we have other alternatives, players of different features that can also take his place. Marcos [Rojo] and Piris and know how to play that position.”
With Rojo likely to stay in central defence Iván Piris will be favourite to start and make his full debut. Leonardo Jardim did also mention the possibility of Gérson Magrão or Diogo Salomão taking the position but with the former not impressing and the latter likely to play further forward we think it will most likely be Piris.
