Abel’s U-19 side started their NextGen campaign with a solid victory away to Aston Villa. Michael Drennan opened the scoring for Villa before Edilino Ié, Carlos Mané and a Tobias Figueiredo penalty gave Sporting an opening win.
Sporting’s youngsters started the game slowly and it was 18-year-old Irish striker Michael Drennan who put Aston Villa ahead.
It didn’t take long for Sporting to fight back when Carlos Mané’s strike hit the post and Edilino Ié was the first man to react as he headed home past goalkeeper Calum Barreett.
The goal seemed to give confidence to Sporting as they started to take control of the game from then onwards after Villa’s early good play.
Sporting doubled their advantage 5 minutes before the second-half through Carlos Mané as he pounced on some lax Aston Villa defending to slot home.
After the break Sporting went further ahead when Mané’s run from the left hand-side resulted in a penalty for Sporting. Captain Tobias Figueiredo, fresh off of his debut for the B-team, smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make the victory comfortable for Sporting.
