Oceano da Cruz’s Sporting B team didn’t get off to a winning start in the Segunda Liga (formerly, Liga de Honra) with a defeat to UD Oliveirense.
Oceano picked a very young Sporting B side for this game with Pedro Mendes and Victor Golas the team’s most senior starting players at 21-years-old.
Despite some good football Sporting B it was Oliveirense who took the lead thanks to Luís Barry after 38 minutes. In truth Sporting should have already been 2 goals ahead by that time with Ricardo Esgaio missing two excellent chances.
Sporting B tried to push on in the second half but failed to create as Oliveirense defended well.
There was drama late on when Diego Rubio, just two minutes after being given a yellow card, was shown a straight red card by referee Bruno Esteves. Replays showed the decision to be incredibly harsh with Rubio sent off for seemingly was just a high boot.
Still, there shouldn’t be too much to be concerned about just yet for Oceano. His team played some good football and results aren’t the most important part of the B team concept – it is the regular playing time that will benefit these players. In particular Santiago Arias, João Mário and Mica Pinto looked good.
Sporting B XI: Victor Golas; Santiago Arias, Pedro Mendes, Tobias Figueiredo, Michael Pinto; João Mário, Filipe Chaby (Iuri Medeiros 61′), Zezinho; Bruma, Ricardo Esgaio (Jorge Chula 81′), Diego Rubio (YC, RC)
