Académica vs. SPORTING Preview

After the irrelevance of the midweek defeat to Lazio it is time for Sporting to focus again on the liga with a tricky trip to Académica.

The home side are currently 6th in the league table and Pedro Emanuel’s side can be happy with their season performance so far, including the 3-0 win over Porto in the Taça de Portugal just last month.

There will be plenty of familiar faces on show too, with Adrien Silva and Cédric Soares on loan from Sporting and likely to play. Adrien Silva in particular has been on a good goalscoring run for Os Estudantes as of late. As well as those two current Sportinguistas, Hélder Cabral and Marinho both spent their some of their youth career with the club.

The last time the two faced off in the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra was back in November, Sporting winning 2-1 that day courtesy of goals from Jaime Valdés and Simon Vukčević.

Having rested many players for the trip to Rome against Lazio in midweek, Domingos Paciência should have a fresh team to choose from. Stijn Schaars will be able to return to league competitions after he served his suspension for 5 yellow cards in the win over Nacional last week.

A win will also help in the momentum for what will be as hectic January on the horizon with a tough Taça de Portugal against Marítimo still to come on Thursday, Domingos will be hoping his side can earn a victory with the minimum of fuss away from hope tomorrow.

Rui Patrício

João Pereira – Ânderson Polga – Oguchi Onyewu – Emiliano Insúa

Daniel Carriço – Stijn Schaars – Elias

Diego Capel – Ricky van Wolfswinkel – André Carrillo
