Santiago Arias has finally completed his move to Sporting and was unveiled in front of the press today. Originally Arias had been set to join the club a few weeks ago, but his transfer for was then stalled as his club, after some uncertainty over legal agreements.
Eventually, Arias managed to leave the club and sign a 5 year contract at Sporting, the contract also has, according to A Bola, a €20,000,000 release clause.
Arias will almost certainly be set to play for the Colombia U-20 squad in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The first match the for Colombians is on the 31st July against France, and it will be an interesting watch for any Sporting fans.
The official Sporting site has some quotes from the young defender:
“I am going to give everything on the pitch and I am going to try my best to make the fans happy. I am going to fight for a place in the team. I arrive here with huge expectations and I want to be a champion.”
Carlos Freitas, the Director of Football also had some things to say about Santiago Arias:
“He is a young Colombian international who has been one of the most prominent figures in his age group in recent years. He is a player that we have been watching for the last 12 months and, like Carrillo, we intend to give him the time that he needs to justify the interest that we have shown in him. We know that the integration of players like him into the team needs a lot of patience, but we are certain that his performances will justify his signing.”
